Rensselaer County eatery Viejo San Juan, located in Troy at 697 Hoosick Road, held its grand opening on Saturday, Sept. 9.
The business also carries Hispanic grocery items and offers catering services.
Adorning its menu are a rotating selection of entrees including jerk chicken, sweet and sour chicken with pineapple, and pastelon, made with thinly sliced plantains, ground beef, and cheese.
Diners can also opt for the shrimp empanadas or roast pork and choose from a number of sides like white and yellow rices, beans, and sweet plantains.
In the few weeks since opening, the restaurant has already amassed a satisfied following, including Rebecca Del Gaizo, of Brunswick, who said her visit "did not disappoint."
“Upon opening the door, you are transformed to Old San Juan,” she wrote on Facebook. “The roast pork was EXCELLENT. It was so juicy and full of flavor. I thought the arroz con gandules was delicious and the rice was perfectly cooked.”
Another reviewer on Google hailed the restaurant as “a little taste of Puerto Rico” and a “hidden gem,” rating its food, atmosphere, and service a 5 out of 5.
